William Dobell (1899 - 1970)
|
Born in Newcastle in 1899, William Dobell was one of Australia’s most celebrated portrait and genre painters, he became renowned for his unique style of painting which allowed his work to vary from Impressionism and Expressionism, and thus bring a distinct character to his subjects.

The year after his death in 1970, The Sir William Dobell Art Foundation was formed and made the sole beneficiary of the artists’ estate. Each year at the Art Gallery of NSW, the Dobell Prize for drawing is also awarded.
