Utopia: A picture story

31 March - 21 May 2006
Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre
Utopia - A Picture Story, is a collection of silk batiks works by artists from Utopia in the eastern region of Central Australia. Conceived as a thematic project and completed in the first quarter of 1988, A Picture Story evolved into a collection that has become a major cultural document as well as an outstanding group of individual works of art, featuring those by Emily Kngwarreye, Gloria Petyarre, and Ada Bird Petyarre, who have since entered the lexicon of great Australian painters.

The works in this exhibition represent the turning point for the Utopia women artists as they heralded the changes which have firmly established them, and Western Desert art movement, in the contemporary arts scene. These works convey the knowledge of and respect for country, and use imagery of their ceremonial designs to encompass the perspectives of the women. Utopia: A Picture Story comes courtesy of the Holmes a Court Collection, Heytesbury with the assistance of Musems & Galleries nsw & the NSW Ministry for the Arts.
