Walk and dont look blak - Destiny Deacon
17 August - 05 November 2006
The Ian Potter Museum of Art
Walk and dont look blak comprises around fifty artworks made since 1990 by one of Australias most renowned artists. The exhibition includes major video, performance, and installation pieces as well as two key photographic series Forced into images (2001) and Postcards from Mummy (1998), which in 2002 were both featured at Documenta 11. Using wit and irony to convey personal and political messages concerning racial stereotypes, Destiny Deacon confronts themes of intimacy, danger, freedom and incarceration. Deacon uses blak humour a term coined by the artist herself to challenge the cliché associated with aboriginality in Australia.
