Our gallery is presenting artwork by Alasdair Macintyre at The Melbourne Art Fair 2006.
“Journeyman†comes at a point in my life where I am at the traditional “half-way†point of the biblical “three score and tenâ€(35), and also the suggested prime age at which the spirit is sustained in eternity.
As in “The Hero with a thousand facesâ€, my self-referential “everyman artist†figure becomes my perpetual fall-guy as the artist-journeyman on his quest for the eternal truth. The cyclical nature of existence is reflected in the recurring motif of the circle in “Journeymanâ€. The Liturgical influence is strong here, as is the works of Dante and others, but the overriding theme is that of the artist faced with the crisis of post-post modernity, and the true nature of art itself, within an aesthetically secular world.
