La Video - Un art une histoire 1965 – 2005, New Media Collection Pompidou

04 December - 25 February 2007
Museum of Contemporary Art - MCA
Video as a means of creative expression appeared in the early 1960s and has developed considerably since then. Originally used by artists to record their live performance works, video became an artistic art form in its own right in the 1990s, and now plays an important role in contemporary art practice. This exhibition presents an overview of how video has developed, drawing on the video and multimedia works in the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. The MNAM has been collecting artists’ video installations and tapes since 1977, when most museums refused to consider video as art.

This major exhibition traces the development of video art from 1965 to the present day featuring some of the most important artists working in this field today, including Nam June Paik (Korea/USA), Bill Viola (USA), Pierre Huyghe (France), Bruce Nauman (USA), Samuel Beckett (Ireland), Ugo Rondinone (Switzerland) and Jean-Luc Godard (France). The first exhibition to travel to Australia covering video so comprehensively, the MCA is proud to be working in tandem with the Centre Pompidou in Paris to bring a show of such magnitude and international significance, to Australian audiences.

To ensure the exhibition traces the history and development of this significant artform, many of the works will be accompanied by documents from their archives (scripts, drawings and stills of the filming) and artist interviews. The exhibition will travel to Sydney having toured to Taipei, Miami and Barcelona and is proposed to tour to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne following its MCA, Sydney presentation. A major publication documenting the exhibition is being produced to accompany the exhibition.
