Through a process of inner questioning and enduring single mindedness, Ian Bettinson provides the viewer with an opportunity to experience a distilled moment in time - a real sense of being there. His paintings shimmer with vibrancy and light that is skilfully captured ‘in situ’ in the desert landscape of Western NSW, an experience that he says forced him to re-examine the tradition of landscape painting in this country. He acknowledges a debt to the Central Desert paintings of Papunya Tula and to Roman and Byzantine mosaics.
