This display in NGV International’s Decorative Arts Passage brings together objects from the Great Exhibitions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries held in Melbourne, London, Paris and Chicago. The London Great Exhibition of 1851 has become a model for the blockbuster design and industry showcase and set the standard for international exhibitions well into the twentieth century. Objects in Great Exhibitions! include medals, catalogues and other documentary material from 1851 to 1937. Factories represented will include ceramics by Minton, Doulton and Wedgwood and glass by Thomas Webb, Brocard and the Venice and Murano Glass Company.
