The art of Fashion. This exhibition pays tribute to the powerful, body conscious and sexy styles that dominated fashion in the 1980s. Never before in the history of dress had women’s fashion combined wide, padded shoulders with curvaceous busts and tight waists to create a look that was as athletic as it was seductive. Strong shape, confident gesture and sturdy detailing gave clothes in the 1980s an almost superhuman edge, particularly among the designers whose work was the most extreme.
This exhibition will concentrate on international designers who introduced this heroic and post-feminist style to fashion and who made the most impact with their uncompromising designs. Italian designers include Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferré, the Fendi sisters, Franco Moschino and Mariuccia Mandelli for Krizia. French designers include Azzedine Alaïa, Claude Montana, Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier, while English and American designers include Anthony Price and Norma Kamali.
