Krishna is one of the most popular of the Hindu gods worshipped throughout Asia and in particular in India. He is known for his playful, mischievous nature, his flirtations with the gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan, his love for Radha, and his heroic defeat of various monsters and demons. These aspects of Krishna and events from his life have provided inspiration for visual arts including paintings, sculptures and textiles, as well as literature and music.
This exhibition will explore Krishna iconography through paintings, sculpture, textiles, photography, and jewellery. Most works are from India, however other areas of south and south-east Asia are represented. Krishna includes both historical and contemporary interpretations of Krishna worship and devotion. Most works will come from the NGV Asian collection, with some loans from private collections.
