An exhibition that celebrates the commitment to collecting twentieth century British art that invigorated all public institutions in the last century. Drawn from the holdings of all public collections in Australia and New Zealand, Modern Britain will examine the principal organisations and movements whose output marked six decades of remarkable change in British art. The impact of the First and Second World Wars on British art and society will also be considered. Against the background of this historical framework, themes within the exhibition will examine disparate approaches taken by British artists to the classic subjects of landscape, the nude and portraiture.
The contributions made to the British art scene by both Australian and New Zealand expatriate artists will be acknowledged. And at various points within the exhibition a focus will be placed upon individual artists whose work is especially well represented in Australasian collections, such as Augustus John, Glyn Philpot, Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Tristram Hillier.
