Leading the Art Gallery of Western Australia Artist in Focus: Asia series is an exhibition of works by renowned Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. Yamamoto’s extraordinary garments have been a significant influence on contemporary haute couture and prêt a porter since his Paris debut in 1982. The exhibition draws together items covering over a twenty-year period of Yamamoto’s practice tracing his subtle shifts in focus and fashion. Each item, however, captures Yamamoto’s unique sensibility whose hallmark is a total understanding of the material’s relation to the human body culminating in minimal yet powerfully graphic silhouettes.
