A Thousand Words

13 July - 21 July 2007
A Thousand Words. We all know the saying a picture is worth a thousand words. Well here is our chance to make those words count. A Thousand Words is a mixed media art exhibition that is exhibiting works in the name of dyslexia. The exhibition will consist of donated works from both established and upcoming artists, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Australian charity Learning Links. Learning Links is dedicated to helping children with learning disabilities, difficulties and developmental delays and their families. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects one in fifteen people. Research shows that the biggest problem with dyslexia is the generation of low self-esteem. As noted by the Department of Health, people with learning disabilities are among the most socially excluded. Around 30% to 42% of children with learning disabilities may need help for emotional and behavioural problems. Dyslexic pupils, who obtain additional specialist help for the greatest possible time before age eleven, are less likely to experience emotional problems. With help children can recognise that dyslexia has its benefits, including very strong visual skills, a vivid imagination, strong practical skills, innovation, and often an above average intelligence. It is the ability to see the bigger picture that makes a dyslexic four times more likely to become a millionaire.
