"Grilled" Exhibition

24 September - 30 September 2008
Percolator Gallery
For over a decade, outsider sub-cultures have influenced the mainstream. "Grilled" explores that creative ethos driving youth culture and popular art today. In 1988 a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground and started painting together after Expo 88. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) underground subcultures of skateboard, surf, punk, & hip hop, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the establishment art world, this group, and sub culture they sprang from, have now become a movement that been transforming pop culture and in particular painting our Highways with murals that now dominate most South east Queensland roads. Artists of Grilled take their inspiration from the urban, bohemian, "street" culture of Brisbane and are strongly influenced by mural and graffiti art, comic and custom car art, and folk art forms such as stencil and hobo art. “Grilled” showcases these artists' current work which is closely aligned with the larger lowbrow art movement, and can be considered to the Australian expression of that movement. Exclusive Opening: Thursday 24th September (from 6.30pm)
